Biography

Shaunna Howell is a contemplative artist who specializes in watercolor painting. She is interested in art as a way of approaching and expressing universal truths and as a method for considering important ideas about the underlying nature of existence. Because of the archetypal nature of her paintings, they seem familiar yet they are obscure enough to allow the viewer to project their own meaning and story into them. Some of her recent paintings have taken years to complete and the care put into them is reflected in the details and the thoughtfulness of the compositions. She is presently working on a series of icon paintings that explore universal topics expressed in the great wisdom traditions. She is currently concentrating on a sub-series of paintings that explore the four sacred trees in the Bible and their underlying symbolic correlates.

Shaunna has been painting for over twenty years with a focus in the last five years on the icon series. She recently entered select paintings in a number of juried exhibitions and received an Award of Merit in the North Valley Art League's Annual Juried National Show in 2009, (Redding, CA,) and won Best of Show in the Redwood Art Associations Winter Exhibition in 2011, (Eureka, CA.)

Shaunna is a Humboldt State University Alumnus with a BA in Transpersonal Psychology through an Interdisciplinary Studies major that combined Psychology, Religious Studies and Fine Art.  She works in the field of Mental Health and continues to pursue interests in religious studies, philosophy and psychology. She finds meaningful expression and practical application of these interests in her daily life through both art and various forms of social service work. She has lived in Humboldt County since 1994 and currently lives in Eureka, California.
